a bit next week to the vice presidential nominees. paul ryan and joe biden will face off in their only debate next thursday night. paul ryan has just left his four-day debate camp. he is heading back to wisconsin for a fund-raiser tonight. and as for the vice president, we check in with msnbc news campaign embed carrie dan. she's embedded with vice president joe biden's team. carrie, vice president biden's schedule shows him to be in wilmington, delaware, right now, and for the next few days. what is planned for him? >> that's right, milissa. he's going to be doing his own debate camp there, up until a day before the debate. he's spending time with chris van hollen, that's his sparring partner. van hollen has worked with paul ryan, he's a democrat from maryland, who worked with ryan with and against on the house budget committee. so van hollen is someone who's very familiar, not only with his policies. so the two of them will be participating in mock debates. they've done two to date, and i'm sure they'll be doing a lot more up until wednesday, before they head to danville, kentucky, f

changer? and team romney seized on an unforced error made by joe biden on the campaign trial. >> how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years. >> the middle class in america is hurting. >> the middle class has been buried the last four years. >> kristen welker and peter alexander are with the obama and romney campaigns in these final hours before the first match-up, the debate tonight. we begin with kristen in nevada with the president. the president will travel to colorado in just a matter of hours. good morning. >> good morning. that's right. president obama will take off for denver in just a few hours. i'm told he'll have a little bit of down time with the first lady before the debate. he'll also do a walk through of the venue. here's how it's going to work. president obama will be given the first question. mitt romney will have the final word tonight. the debate will be broken up into six 15-minute segments for a 90-minute debate. it will include three on the economy, one on health care, one on governing and one on the state of gov

of debate can we expect there between joe biden and paul ryan? >> fii think if you ask a lot o republican folks, they're looking forward to this more so than presidential debate. they think they have a rock star in paul ryan. he'll have the opportunity to be fully unleashed in that 90-minute session with joe biden. one of the things he said to chris wallace today is he's not a line guy. he's not going to try to razzle-dazzle you with some line that sounds like it's been coined and in his back pocket for a month and a half. he's going to talk about the policies he and mitt romney want to put into play. he knows that vice president biden is going to come after him on his medicare and budget. >> how's he going to respond? >> they're ready. they want to be able to make the case to the american people that the real threat to medicare and its future is the president's affordable health care act, which they lovingly refer to as obamacare, and the fact that the president's plan extracts $716 million away to pay for that. what paul ryan isn't telling his supporters is that his budget proposal also

report and with us from waution, jared bernstein, former economist for joe biden. it's good to have you here. jared, i start with you. as we look at these numbers, is this a true game changer for the president? >> it certainly helps. i mean, this month's decline in the unemployment rate that you have been talking about from 8.1% down to 7.8%, that's the good kind of decline in unemployment because it came from a lot more people getting jobs. if you recall back last month, i was sitting in this chair telling you that the decline in unemployment from 8.3% to 8.1% was illusory. it tells you, as i said, more people came into the job market and got jobs. but it also tells you that the monthly surveys are volatile. however, i think there's other evidence in this report, perhaps we can get into it, that shows some momentum moving in the right direction. the pace of employment growth appears to be accelerating in the payroll survey as well. >> ron, i want to ask you about jack welch's tweet about the books basically being cooked. you know, he's a ge pioneer. we know him well around 30 rock. >>

night, how would you advise him to get his mojo back? >> i find it ironic they have been holding joe biden back. be careful what you say now and now they need him to go out there to do the knock-out punch and lay it on the line for the mid class. he will do that. vice president biden is undoubtedly an intelligent man. he knows his material and he is not going to back down whatsoever. and there's a lot of target-rich environment in the holes that have been offered by the ryan plan. so i think the first thing is, let's get a great vice presidential debate and reset the stage for the president to come out and get after it again. >> ed, thank you so much. we love when we can get you in here early in the morning. >> i like it. it's good to be here. i know a lot of liberals in this country are frustrated right now. this is a bump in the road. it's not a redirect. >> ed schultz, catch him weeknights here on msnbc at 8:00 p.m. he plays for politics. thank you. >>> i just want to point out we are paying attention to what's going on in denver right now with a president obama rally scheduled fo

-see tv. >> it will be, joe biden is a very skilled debater. he's been at this for a long time. he's a very good on his feet. and paul ryan is a very bright guy. he'll do a great job in this debate. but it's going to be quite, quite a battle. >> chris, do you think that last question, do you think that the vice presidential debate. this week, does it, does it take on even more importance considering what happened in colorado for the democrats last week? >> yeah. i mean absolutely. here's what i think has happened since the debate. you know the media now is focused on these debate performances and to a large extent, even the public is focused on these debate performan performances. so going into the vice presidential debate did you're the obama campaign from democrats' perspective, we not only want to do well, we want to be able to go on the offense and disabuse ryan of any of his facts or attacks. what you don't want to happen is ryan come out of that debate with any kind of victory or clear momentum. because then that feeds that momentum on other side. >> democratic strategist chr
